The trade-off is more cabling and less freedom to reposition the halves without managing those cables.

This architecture makes the most sense for users who never move the board, prefer a fixed installation, or want both the host connection and communication between the halves to remain wired. It is not the same architecture as Elytra's USB mode.

Where Elytra's USB mode fits

Elytra's USB mode connects the left half directly to the computer. According to the official manual, the right half remains the wireless peripheral, so both halves still need to be powered on. Bluetooth is convenient, but placement still matters

Bluetooth performance can be affected by distance, obstacles, receiver placement, metal cases, and the rest of the desk layout. The official Elytra FAQ recommends keeping the computer or receiver close to the keyboard and avoiding positions hidden behind metal or underneath the desk.

Because the two halves may occupy different positions, test the actual desk arrangement with every device in place. If the connection becomes unstable, reduce the distance, remove obvious obstacles, and compare Bluetooth with USB host mode before assuming the keyboard has a hardware fault.

Creative desks: when wireless makes room for other tools

Writers may want a notebook between the halves. Designers may use a drawing tablet. Editors may need a control surface, pen display, or trackpad. In those setups, a cable across the center can interfere with tools that are used as often as the keyboard itself.

Which connection setup fits your use?

Choose a fully wireless split keyboard when the desk changes often, multiple devices are involved, or the central workspace needs to remain clear. It is also the strongest option when portability and independent placement are the main reasons for choosing a split keyboard.

Choose a fully wired split keyboard when the board will remain on one desk, battery management is unwanted, or the simplest possible signal path matters more than cable management. It can also be easier to deploy and troubleshoot at shared workstations.

Use Elytra's Bluetooth mode for cable-free placement and device switching. Use its USB host mode for a direct host connection, configuration, charging the left half, or troubleshooting, while remembering that the right half remains wireless and charges separately. Many users will switch modes according to the task rather than choose one permanently.
