What does hot-swappable actually mean?
In a soldered mechanical keyboard, each switch is soldered to the PCB to make its electrical connection. Replacing a switch normally means opening the keyboard, heating the solder joints, removing the old switch, and soldering in a new one.
A hot-swappable PCB uses sockets that hold the switch terminals instead. With a compatible switch, you can remove it with a switch puller and press in a replacement without soldering.
The current Elytra product page lists hot-swap support and two switch options: CloudShell White Linear and JZF Mist Silent Linear. It also lists two backup switches and a combined keycap and switch puller in the box. That is one person's experience, not a promise that it will feel the same for everyone. People who prefer a more defined key feel may want to compare compatible alternatives.
This is where hot-swap has a practical benefit. If your first switch feels too light, the sound becomes distracting, or the feel is simply different from what you expected, you can change a compatible set later. If a single switch develops a problem, you may only need to replace that one switch.
Is hot-swap more valuable on a split keyboard?
Not automatically. The core benefit of hot-swap is the same on a split keyboard as on any other mechanical keyboard: compatible switches can be replaced without soldering. What changes with a split keyboard is that your setup can become more personal as you settle on spacing between the halves, hand positions, shortcuts, and thumb-key use.
As you keep using it, your preferences may become clearer. That does not mean you need a different switch under every key from day one. It is usually simpler to begin with one switch type across the keyboard. If a particular key later feels consistently different in real work, you can consider changing that position.

Over time, repairability can matter more than experimentation
For keyboard enthusiasts, the appeal of hot-swap may be trying different switches. In everyday use, repairability can matter just as much. If one mechanical switch starts chattering, becomes inconsistent, stops registering reliably, or is physically damaged, hot-swap may let you replace that switch without soldering.
It cannot repair every kind of fault. Replacing a switch will not fix a socket that has separated from the PCB, a controller issue, or damage elsewhere in the keyboard. Hot-swap makes switch-level issues easier to address; it is not a solution for every hardware problem.

Important: hot-swap does not mean every switch is compatible
This is especially important when choosing a low-profile hot-swappable split keyboard. Low-profile mechanical switches do not all follow one universal standard. Switches that look similar can differ in PCB footprint, pin position, housing shape, plate fit, overall height, stem shape, and keycap compatibility.
A Keyboard Builders' Digest review of Elytra identifies it with the Kailh Choc V2 platform and notes that Choc V1 and V2 share a switch footprint while using different keycap stem shapes. Kailh describes Choc V2 as using a cross stem with a circular base, while its Choc hot-swap socket page is presented for Choc V1. The practical takeaway is that socket fit alone is not enough to establish full compatibility.
Before buying a replacement, check the keyboard, switch family, plate and housing fit, stem shape, and keycap connection. A full-height MX switch, another brand's low-profile switch, a magnetic Hall-effect switch, or a switch simply described as “low-profile” may not work in the same keyboard.

How to change a switch without damaging the socket
Turn the keyboard off and remove the keycap. Use an appropriate switch puller to pull the switch straight upward. If it does not come out smoothly, do not force it by twisting or prying; stop and check the position of the puller.
Before installing a replacement, inspect its pins, align it squarely with the socket and plate, and press it in evenly. Test the key before moving on to the next switch. Once you have found a setup you like, there is no need to remove switches routinely. Changing them makes the most sense when you have a clear preference or a switch-level issue to solve.
So, are hot-swappable split keyboards worth it?
For many people choosing their first mechanical split keyboard, hot-swap is a useful feature. Its value depends on being able to obtain compatible replacement switches. It gives you room to change the feel later, move to a quieter compatible setup, or replace an individual failed switch.
Its value is lower if you already know exactly which switch you want, do not expect to customize anything, and are comfortable handling a future repair with soldering. A well-made soldered keyboard is not inherently worse simply because its switches are not easy to replace.
It is best to think of hot-swap as a maintenance and flexibility feature, not a performance upgrade. Hot-swap alone does not make a keyboard faster, quieter, or more ergonomic. It preserves the option to change compatible switches later. When comparing keyboards, check whether the supported switch family is clearly identified and whether replacement switches are actually available.

If your priority is access to the widest possible selection of third-party switches, confirm the supported switch family and replacement availability before buying.
